Rules and Regulations

General Rules

1. From the 48th edition of the Santa Fe-Coronda Swim on, the Coronda River Swim Association (OC) will organize an “Open” swim, exclusively for “amateur” swimmers.

2. All the participants including swimmers and those who attend as assistants, must comply with the event rules.

Breaching the event rules will result in:

  • Disqualification (DQ) of the swimmer and/or their Team.
  • Ban from participating in future events.
  • Eventually, prosecution.

3. The event will take place every year in December.

4. This event will not be considered as an official competition.

5. This swim is open to swimmers from all over the world.

6. The course to join Santa Fe and Coronda will be established by the OC.

7. Registrations will be done on the dates and times established by the OC.

8. There will be two categories: SOLO and TEAMS.

9. Event words and terms:

Amateur: it is the denomination that will receive the swimmers who participate in this event, to whom the OC will not require any kind of credential or license that certifies any type of category (federated, promotional, among others) or membership in any sports institution, which enables the swimmer to be eligible as a participant.
Registration: it consists of the form and supporting documentation being sent to the OC by the swimmer or Team interested in participating in the event.
Approval: it consists of the OC informing the registered swimmer or Team that he/she/they are on the entry list.
Scratch: when a Swimmer or Team, once they have been accepted on the entry list, withdraw an entry from the event, without participating by his/her/their own decision.
Postponement: It occurs when the event does not start due to safety reasons and it is rescheduled for the following day.
Cancellation: It occurs when the event does not start due to safety reasons, without being rescheduled.
Suspension: It occurs when the event has started and must be interrupted due to safety reasons. All swimmers are obliged to exit the water.
Withdrawal:It occurs when the event is taking place and a Swimmer or Team withdraws from it.
Disqualification:It occurs when the event is taking place and a Swimmer or Team must exit the water due to an infringement of the rules set by the OC or in case a Swimmer or Team completes the course outside the time limit set by the OC.

All the swimmers

10. Categories: the categories are:

  • SOLO: 1 swimmer.
  • TEAMS: 4 swimmers.

11. Qualifying time: In the SOLO category, the swimmer must prove to have completed a swim of at least 4 (four) hours in the last 2 (two) years, presenting the corresponding certification issued by the organization in charge of the event.

The swimmer who cannot certify a 4-hours swim will be able to enroll in the “pre-swim” the OC will hold on a date to be determined which will last at least 4 (four) hours. The swimmer who finishes the swim will immediately be included on the list of participants, otherwise, will not be able to participate in the swim and will not have the right to get a refund of the registration fee.

12. Minimum age: All swimmers must be at least 16 years old on the day of the event. Those swimmers under the age of 18 must have the authorization of a parent or legal guardian, who will sign in behalf of the swimmer all the forms and/or documentation required by the OC.

13. Swimsuit:must comply with the World Aquatics rules::

  • Not cover the neck; and not extend beyond the shoulders or ankles.
  • Not wear any item with neoprene or any other buoyant material.

14. Swim cap: Swimmers must, at all times, wear their official Event swim cap while in the water. Not wearing it will result in the disqualification of the swimmer or team.

15. Participant number: All Swimmers must have the number assigned by the OC tattooed or written on the palms of both hands.

16. Forbidden the use of any form of artificial swimming aid:

  • Fins, webbed gloves, pull buoys.
  • Holding onto a Support Boat.
  • Getting help from another boat or swimmer.
  • Drafting from an escort boat, Support Boat, paddle craft or another non-registered swimmer.

Registration

17. Form: It will be on the OC official website and must be completed and sent to be reviewed.

18. Dates: the registration window will be from June 1st to June 30th every year. The OC reserves the right to modify this date and to close registrations early if the maximum number of participants is reached.

19. Quota: For safety reasons, a maximum of 30 (thirty) boats will be set, distributed between SOLO and RELAY TEAMS

The OC may modify that quantity according to the safety conditions on the river.

20. Waiting List: the OC will establish a number of “substitute” swimmers and/or teams in case there is a withdrawal, they may be invited to enter the list of participants.

21. Approval: Sending the form and the documentation does not imply the swimmer or the team’s participation; it will be confirmed with communication of approval by the OC and the payment of the first installment of the registration fee.

22. Fees and payment terms:

  • SOLO Category: US$ 500.- (five hundred American dollars)
    • US$ 100.- within the next 48 hours after the OC approval
    • US$ 200.- before July 31st.
    • US$ 200.- before September 30th.
  • TEAMS Category: US$ 1.400.- (one thousand four hundred American dollars)
    • US$ 300.-within the next 48 hours after the OC approval
    • US$ 550.- before July 31st.
    • US$ 550.- before September 30th.

23. Payment method:by bank transfer.

24. The fee will include:

  • Event insurance.
  • Security boats along the course.
  • Assistance at the start and the finish line.
  • Medical assistance on land and water.
  • Official timing and Real time GPS.
  • Safety officers onboard of support boats.
  • Official swim cap (mandatory)
  • Official event shirt.
  • Swimmer’s registration on the Official Website.
  • Certificate of participation.
  • Prizes for finishing the swim (non-monetary).

25. The fee will not include:

  • The support motorboat.

Support Boats

26. Mandatory: In both categories, all swimmers must have a support motorboat along the course

27. Own boat

  • Each Swimmer or Team may have their own support boat, which must be approved by the OC.
  • The OC will set the characteristics the boat must fulfill and the approval will include the minimum dimensions, safety equipment and complying of current regulations.
  • The use of your own support boat must be informed to the OC in the registration form.

28. Request support boat:

  • When filling in the registration form, the Swimmer or Team may request the OC to be provided a support boat, paying the rental fee.
  • The fee includes the boat, the skipper and the fuel
  • The allocation of boats will be subject to availability.

29. People onboard: The number of people onboard must not exceed the maximum boat capacity, established by the authorities.

It will be mandatory the presence of:

  • Skipper or helmsman
  • Coach/assistant (SOLO category).
  • Relay swimmers (TEAM category).
  • Officer (assigned by the OC).

30. Responsibility: The skipper or helmsman will be responsible for guaranteeing the Swimmer or the Team’s safety, complying with all the navigation regulations established by the OC and the authorities.

31. Compliance with the Rules: The support boat must respect the assigned navigation areas, the maximum speed allowed and any other guideline imposed by the OC.

Not complying with these rules may result in the disqualification of the Swimmer or Team.

The Course

32. Extension: The swim will have an extension of 58 km (fifty-eight km) (36 miles) and the course will be as follows:

  • Start: Costanera Este Beach-Santa Fe.
  • Course: main course of Santa Fe River, Cuatro Bocas, main course of Coronda River.
  • Arrival: Municipal Beach- Coronda, where the touchpad indicates the finish line.

33. Modification: The OC may modify the course due to safety reasons.

34.Team Swim:

  • The 4 (four) relay swimmers may start and arrive swimming together. The OC will set the distance from the start and to the arrival where they will be allowed to do it.
  • Each Swimmer must swim 30 (thirty) minutes. While this takes place, the other 3 (three) relay swimmers must be onboard of the support motorboat.
  • The relay exchange will be made by touching the swimmer’s palms once his/her leg is finished, and it must be visible.

35. Time limit: The maximum duration of the event will be 10 (ten) hours. Those out of that time limit must withdraw from the event and get on the support boat. In case of non-compliance, a monetary fine and possible additional penalties will be imposed.

36. Exception: The only case in which a Swimmer or Team that is to be disqualified for exceeding the time limit set in the above point will not comply, is that the Swimmer or Team had already reached the checkpoint at the water supply pump in Coronda.

Event Officers

37. The World Aquatics (WA) for Open Water Swimming rules will be applied.

38. Officer onboard: The OC will designate an officer to each Swimmer or Team, who will be onboard of the support motorboat.

39. Timing: It will be tracked manually.

40. Qualifier: This event will be a qualifier for the elite swim, to be held in February. All the Swimmers that participate in the SOLO category and complete the course under the time limit set by the OC- for Women and Men- will be eligible for the elite swim.

41. Technical briefing: The OC will hold a technical briefing where all the necessary guidelines will be explained on the day before the event. Attendance is mandatory, both for swimmers and assistants. It may result in the disqualification of a swimmer in case of absence of one of them.

Registration Fee Refund

42. Scratch :

  • The Swimmer confirmed by the OC who decides not to participate in the event:
    • Up to August 30th: will be refunded 50 % of the amount he/she had already paid as registration fee.
    • From September 1st to September 30th: the refund will be 25 % of the amount already paid.
    • From October 1st on: There will be no refunds.
  • Confirmed Teams by the OC who decide not to participate in the event will not be refunded the registration fee, at any time. In case a Swimmer enrolled as part of a Team cannot participate in the event, may be substituted by another swimmer. This situation must be reported through the protocol established by the OC.

43.Cancellation: If weather conditions prevent the start and normal conducting of the event, it will be postponed to the following day. In case of a definite cancellation, the Swimmer will not be refunded the registration fee.

44. Suspension: Once the event has started, the OC may suspend it due to safety reasons. In which case, the Swimmer must obey the order to stop. Participants will not be refunded the registration fee.

Results and Awards

45. The results in both categories will be published on www.santafecoronda.com.ar after every event.

46. Awards:

  • Medal and Certificate of Participation to the Swimmer or Team that finishes the course.
  • The OC may establish other prizes or awards to the Swimmer or Team that reaches the finish line.

Responsibility

47. At the moment of registration, each participant declares to know and accept the World Aquatics Rules and regulations.

Furthermore, he/she will disclaim any responsibility to the OC, the sponsors, local authorities and other parties involved in the event.

He/she will authorize the use of his/her image in photographs and videos without compensation of any kind.

48. Before September 30th, the OC will send the Official Event Rules, which must be signed along with the required medical documentation. Not submitting the documentation in the established deadlines and forms may result in the exclusion of the Swimmer or Team without right to compensation.

FAQS

Since 1964, the AMARC has been the organizing body of the Santa Fe-Coronda International Swim.
The same association is in charge of organizing this event for amateur swimmers, ensuring its performance under the same standards of safety and respect for this historic event.

The main objective of this new mode is “swimming the Santa Fe-Coronda”. The main challenge is completing the swim.
Even though the time will be recorded and the swimmers who complete the course will be recognized, the essence of the event is not competitive but rather experiential and for personal fulfillment.

No. No credential, license or sports affiliation is required. The event is open to any swimmer that complies with the requisites.

Duration depends on three factors:
1. Weather conditions on the day of the event.
2. The river’s height, which has an influence on the speed of the current.
3. The swimming pace of the solo swimmer or team.

Throughout the course it is swum downstream, which helps the swimmer's progress. The average river speed is 4 km/h (2.5 mph) The current is not a risk for the swimmer but an aid.

The environment temperature may be above 30 °C (86 °F) at noon. The river water is usually at about 26 °C- 28 °C. (78.8 °F- 82.4 °F).

No. The course will not be marked. Official boats will show it.
Only the arrival area will be clearly signaled, letting the swimmer see it and touch the touchpad.

It will only be immediately suspended in case of an electric storm. Other bad weather conditions such as wind, rain or low visibility will be evaluated by the OC which will prioritize safety.

Yes. 10 (ten) hours. Near the date we will analyze extending the time limit depending on the height of the river and the speed of the current.

No, the OC does not provide hydration. The swimmer must provide his or her own refreshment supplies.

● SOLO: 1 swimmer.
● TEAMS: 4 swimmers. Team relay mode.
There will be no age categories in either of the two modes.

Relay teams can be formed without restrictions as regards age or gender. Each team must consist of 4 swimmers.

Yes. All swimmers must be a minimum age of 16 on the day of the swim. All swimmers under the age of 18 must be registered by a parent or legal guardian.

6. The Organizing Committee (OC) will review your application and confirm if you are approved.
7. You should pay the first installment and send the proof of payment.
8. You will be included on the list of participants.

It’s a first-in first-served system, by order of enrollment. The OC will review the entry form and will accept or reject it.

No! This event is very attractive but it is a swim that definitely requires a special physical and mental preparation with qualified professionals. For this reason the OC requires a 4-hour swim as a previous record.

No.

Yes. Only in the Team mode, up to a month (1 month) prior to the event. You will have to complete the registration form for the new relay participant.

Yes. The limit is measured by the number of support boats: one (1) boat per Solo swimmer or per team (of 4 swimmers). The limit is 30 boats, thus there will be 30 swimmers in the river at the same time.

Yes. A waiting list will be created for those who enroll after the first quota is completed. Those swimmers will be informed and will be able to enter if a spot is freed.

In case of quitting, the swimmer must immediately inform the support boat and the OC in order to proceed with the necessary assistance.

The OC may close registrations if the quota is reached before June 30th or open a new window for those who had sent the form late.

Yes. It is mandatory to have a support motorboat. It can be your own or it can be provided by the OC, after paying the rental fee.

Yes. You will have to inform it in the entry form and provide the boat details in order to be authorized by the OC. In addition, the boat must enter a closed area where a preliminary inspection will be carried out.

Yes. In case you don’t have your own support boat you will have to inform it in the entry form and enable the OC to provide for it after paying a rental fee.

The OC will have a safety deployment with support boats, medical assistance and checkpoints along the course.

The number will depend on the number of swimmers enrolled. They will be clearly identified during the course.

It must comply with certain standards, including the maximum capacity of people onboard, the skipper must have a license, the engine must have a propeller protector and the boat must have all the documentation and safety elements established by current regulations.

Yes, up to a month (1 month) prior to the event. You will have to complete the registration form.

The inspection will take place 48 hours before the start of the event. In case the boat does not pass the inspection, the participant will have 24 hours to fix the details that are not authorized. Once the deadline has expired, the swimmer or the team will not be authorized to participate, without refund of the registration fee.

You should follow the official schedule that will indicate ○ the time of the mandatory event briefing
○ the time of the entrance to the closed area if you have your own support boat.
○ other official events (to be confirmed).

Yes. The event briefing and some other activities to be confirmed will be mandatory. They will be announced in time.

This mode is centered on experience and personal fulfillment. Thus, all swimmers who finish the swim will be given a prize and a certificate of participation. There is no monetary award.

No. The priority will be given by the order of registration, with the exception that those who do not meet this requirement must register for the pre-swim in October.

No. The two categories are SOLO and TEAMS in 4-swimmers relays

Yes. Neoprene suits will be allowed for the October pre-swim because the water temperature will probably be a couple grades above 20°C (68°F).
